One person has died and eleven others have been injured after a bus believed to have been transporting undocumented Malawian nationals overturned near the Musina Reception Centre in Limpopo Province, South Africa.

According to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), the deceased was the driver of the bus. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver is suspected to have lost control of the vehicle due to fatigue, causing it to overturn.

The bus was reportedly travelling from KwaZulu-Natal Province to the Musina Reception Centre, where undocumented foreign nationals are being processed before being repatriated to their respective countries.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, providing first aid to the injured before transporting them to nearby hospitals for further medical treatment.

South Africa Authorities have not yet released the identities or nationalities of all those injured, although the passengers are believed to have included Malawian nationals.

The accident comes at a time when South Africa is experiencing an increase in the movement of undocumented migrants to reception centres ahead of ongoing repatriation efforts.

Hundreds of Malawians have recently gathered at the Musina facility while awaiting their return home.

Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, while government officials are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.

The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of undocumented migrants, many of whom undertake long and hazardous journeys under difficult conditions while travelling across South Africa.
