The High Court’s Criminal Division in Lilongwe today resumes hearing the murder case of 30-year-old Memory Kamange, with suspect Phillip Malenga expected to be paraded as part of the proceedings.
The court is also expected to hear testimony from the State’s sixth witness before conducting a visit to the crime scene as the prosecution continues presenting its case.
During Tuesday’s hearing, Detective Sub-Inspector Charles Biliwita of Kanengo Police Station testified that Airtel Malawi call records linked Malenga to the victim’s stolen mobile phone.
He told the court that the suspect made three consecutive calls on February 11, 2026, using the handset taken from Kamange at the crime scene.
Biliwita further testified that another contact identified through the call records helped investigators trace and arrest the suspect.
The court also heard from nurse Stella Thandie Warren of UROMED Hospital, who testified that Malenga led police officers, a medical officer and family members to Area 18 Botanic Garden, where Kamange’s body was recovered.
Warren told the court that the suspect admitted to raping the victim before allegedly killing her by tying a string around her neck and abandoning the body in thick bush.
Malenga is represented by Counsel Taona Banda, Levison Seyani and Tisungane Thawe from the Legal Aid Bureau, while Senior State Advocates Festas Sakanda, Luckia Jafali and Papano Kamwendo from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions are leading the prosecution.
Justice Kondwani Banda is presiding over the case, which continues today with the suspect’s parade, testimony from the State’s sixth witness and a planned visit to the crime scene.
