ESCOM says power cuts ease after recovery push

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says power cuts have eased following a nationwide recovery push aimed at stabilising electricity supply, bringing relief to households and businesses across the country.

For the past few weeks, Malawi has been experiencing persistent and frustrating power outages that left many homes and businesses in darkness for long hours.

The situation saw frequent unannounced blackouts, forcing many families to adjust daily routines while businesses relied heavily on generators to stay afloat.

In several areas, electricity supply was unstable, with repeated interruptions disrupting productivity, communication, and household activities.

The widespread outages created growing concern among consumers, as the country’s power system struggled to maintain consistent supply.

ESCOM says the recent improvement is the result of an intensified nationwide recovery operation carried out by its technical teams to restore stability on the grid.

The utility says engineers have been working around the clock under an aggressive fault-clearance programme targeting damaged infrastructure and overloaded sections of the network.

According to ESCOM, teams have been deployed across the country to repair faults, restore affected lines, and reduce system breakdowns that contributed to prolonged outages.

The corporation also says maintenance works on key generation equipment and substations have been completed or are ongoing to strengthen overall grid performance.

ESCOM further says it has improved internal coordination, with enhanced supervision at operational centres aimed at speeding up response times and reducing delays in repairs.

The utility acknowledges public cooperation, saying customers have played a role by reporting faults promptly, conserving electricity during peak hours, and remaining patient during maintenance works.

However, ESCOM says the current stability remains part of a short-term recovery phase as longer-term solutions continue to be implemented.

Major projects underway include the Mozambique–Malawi (MOMA) interconnector, rehabilitation of the 31MW Tedzani hydropower station, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) aimed at strengthening future supply reliability.
