Hit series sparks debate over marriage, infidelity and revenge
Netflix drama The Polygamist has taken social media by storm in Malawi, with viewers flooding Facebook, X and TikTok with reactions to the show’s controversial plot twists and characters.
The series has become one of the most discussed topics in the country’s entertainment circles, with many Malawians sharing memes, opinions and personal reflections inspired by the show.
Much of the online conversation has centred on the character Jonasi and his relationships with multiple women.
X user KandyPure tweeted “The number of times I’ve said ‘Yooooohh’ while watching this show. And I’m just on episode 14.” She added: “What I enjoyed about The Polygamist is how Joyce got her sweet revenge. That man did her dirty for no reason.”
The show’s popularity has grown beyond streaming platforms and spilled into everyday conversations and social media trends.
Its rise in Malawi has also coincided with a separate social media controversy involving allegations that a prominent Malawian businessman fathered children with multiple women. The claims, which have dominated online discussions in recent weeks, remain unverified.
For many social media users, the similarities between the unfolding online drama and the Netflix series have made the show impossible to ignore. Lady_in_Red captured the mood among many viewers in Malawi, tweeting: “Ine kuthawa watching ‘The Polygamist’ on Netflix, osadziwa kuti ndikumana nayo ya live live pa Twitter Malawi pano” (I avoided watching The Polygamist on Netflix only to be confronted a real life episode on Twtter Malawi).
The discussion has also drawn in celebrities. Nigerian music star Davido weighed in on the series, posting: “Yo JONASI is WILD.”
Not everyone agrees on who should bear responsibility for the drama portrayed in the series. Malawian social media user Don Khiva argued that while Jonasi was clearly at fault, the women who entered relationships with him also knew he was married.
“I completely agree that Jonasi was wrong 100%, without question. His actions were unacceptable,” he wrote.
“However, every woman who entered a relationship with Jonasi knew that he was married and had a wife, yet they chose to continue with the relationship.”
The debate has exposed sharply divided views among Malawian audiences about accountability, infidelity, gender expectations and modern relationships.
