What started as a personal relationship and growing music opportunities in South Africa has now ended in a dramatic break for Malawian hip-hop artist IKK over xenophobia.

In a powerful demonstration of solidarity, renowned Malawian hip-hop artist IKK has drawn a line in the sand, terminating his relationship with a South African partner and cancelling all upcoming music video shoots in the country.

The artist announced the decision in a Facebook post on Thursday, declaring that blood is thicker than water as he prioritized the plight of fellow Africans over his personal ties.

IKK expressed that the xenophobic violence, which has spread like wildfire across the region, made it impossible for him to continue working in South Africa.

Consequently, his new music video will be shot in Tanzania, marking a sharp departure from his previous works filmed in the country.

This move follows reports that South African artists are facing international booking cancellations as the backlash against the violence grows.

According to SABC News, the influx of immigrants has turned the nation’s employment sector into a pressure cooker, leading to high rates of joblessness among citizens and fueling the anger of anti-immigrant groups.

With these groups setting a June 30th ultimatum, nations including Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and Malawi have reportedly and partially evacuated their citizens to ensure their safety.
