Stakeholders are warning that gaps in water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services continue to expose children to preventable diseases and disrupt their education, calling for greater investment to protect every child’s future.
Milala Good Samaritan Child Development Centre in Machinga made the call as it commemorated the Day of the African Child under the theme “Wash and Sanitation for Every Child.”
Speaking during the event, Program Officer Betina Msunje said every child deserves access to quality education, nutritious food, proper shelter and good hygiene.
“It is very crucial to make sure that each and every child enjoys their fundamental rights. Children need access to quality education, nutritious food, proper shelter and good hygiene in order to grow into responsible and productive citizens,” said Msunje.

She noted that poor sanitation and inadequate hygiene facilities continue to expose children to preventable diseases and affect their education, stressing that access to clean water and proper sanitation is essential for children’s health and development.
Msunje also called on parents, community leaders, government institutions and development partners to work together to promote children’s welfare and ensure that no child is left behind.
The commemoration featured activities aimed at raising awareness about hygiene practices, including handwashing and environmental cleanliness.
