Man dumps bags of human bones in SA

A disturbing discovery has left residents of Ezimbokodweni, near Adams in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, unsettled after a man was seen dumping bags containing human bones at a local dumping site.

According to reports from international media outlets, the man identified as Fikani Vezi has claimed he did not know the bags contained human remains. He said the load was handed to him at a cemetery in Clairwood, and only later realised what he had been transporting.

Vezi said a receptionist at the cemetery offered him R400 to dispose of what he estimates to be 15 bags of refuse.

It is believed that the receptionist told him she did not know where the person who normally handles it disposes of the bags and said he could dump it anywhere.

Vezi first went to the Isiphingo waste management facility but officials refused to let him dump there and they directed him to a landfill site in Illovo.

Seeing that Illovo was too far, Vezi decided to dump the bags close to his home before leaving to fetch people working elsewhere.

Forensic vehicles arrived and removed some of the bags on Monday night. More bags were collected on Tuesday.

However, investigations into the origins of the remains are ongoing and Police are in contact with the Clairwood cemetery to establish how the bones ended up in refuse bags.
