Malawian caught taking explosive cables to SA

Malawian Arrested In Sa- Malawi24

A Malawian national has been arrested at Beitbridge border after authorities allegedly uncovered explosive cables hidden inside sacks of rice.

The arrest happened when officers from the Border Management Authority conducted routine inspections on a Malawi-registered bus entering South Africa.

During the checks, officers reportedly flagged suspicious luggage, prompting a detailed search that led to the discovery of the hidden materials.

Security officials moved in immediately, arresting the suspect on the spot before transferring him to Musina Police Station, where he remains detained as investigations continue.

Authorities say they are now working to establish where the explosive cables came from and how they ended up concealed among passenger belongings, amid concerns over cross-border smuggling through the busy border corridor.

The incident has intensified scrutiny at Beitbridge, a key regional gateway where security agencies have recently increased inspections of buses and cargo vehicles.
