FDH Premiership week Six review: Wanderers join summit scramble as title race springs to life
The FDH Bank Premiership title race took on a new complexion in Week Six as Mighty Wanderers stormed into a three-way tie at the top, capping a weekend that delivered significant shifts in momentum and further evidence that this season’s championship battle could be one of the most competitive in recent years.
After entering the weekend as leaders, Masters FC surrendered top spot following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to an increasingly impressive Ekhaya FC at Mpira Stadium.
Allen Chihana struck in each half to hand Masters only their second defeat of the campaign and underline Ekhaya’s growing credentials as a side capable of challenging the league’s established powers.
Masters’ slip-up opened the door for Silver Strikers, who seized the opportunity with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over MAFCO FC at Silver Stadium. Ernest Petro’s second-half strike proved decisive as the Central Bankers collected their fourth win of the season and briefly climbed to the summit of the standings.
Blue Eagles ensured they remained firmly in contention after securing a comfortable 2-0 victory over struggling Creck Sporting Club at Dimba Stadium. Tonic Viyuyi netted in either half to hand the Eagles maximum points and keep them level with Silver Strikers in an increasingly congested race at the top.
LUANAR Mitundu FC produced one of the standout performances of the weekend with a commanding 3-0 victory over Civil Service United. Moses Nyirenda opened the scoring before Raheam Mtondera added a late brace to complete a comprehensive display that condemned Civil to a third consecutive defeat.
The biggest statement, however, arrived on Sunday when Mighty Wanderers dismantled Chitipa United 4-0 away from home to force their way into the title equation. Goals from Isaac Kaliati, Lameck Mithi, and Muhammad Sulumba, together with an own goal from Blessings Joseph, completed a dominant performance that lifted the Nomads level on points with Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles.
Wanderers’ victory also highlighted their growing attacking strength. Having scored four goals against Karonga United in midweek and another four against Chitipa United, the Nomads have emerged as the league’s most prolific side and now boast the strongest attacking record among the leading contenders.
Elsewhere, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets were forced to settle for a point after salvaging a dramatic 1-1 draw against Moyale FC at Mwanza Stadium. Lucky Mkandawire looked set to hand Moyale a memorable victory before George Chaomba struck deep into stoppage time to rescue the former champions.
Karonga United left it equally late to edge Red Lions 1-0, with Godfrey Sibale scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute to secure all three points in a tightly contested encounter.
At Dedza Stadium, GC Dedza Dynamos finally found relief after enduring a difficult start to the season. Chifuniro Mpinganjira’s second-half goal secured a 1-0 victory over Kamuzu Barracks and delivered the club’s first win, first goal, and first three points of the campaign.
The weekend’s results have left the championship race finely poised. Wanderers, Silver Strikers, and Blue Eagles are now locked on 13 points at the summit, separated only by goal difference, while Masters FC remains just a point behind. Ekhaya FC’s victory has also drawn them closer to the leading pack and reinforced their status as one of the season’s emerging forces.
Further down the table, Creck Sporting Club remains rooted to the bottom without a win, while GC Dedza Dynamos’ breakthrough victory offers renewed hope in their battle to move away from danger.
With only a single point separating the top four sides and several contenders beginning to gather momentum, Week 6 may ultimately be remembered as the weekend that transformed the title race from a two-team contest into a multi-club battle.
As the FDH Bank Premiership moves into Week Seven, the margins remain remarkably fine, and with every contender showing both strengths and vulnerabilities, the race for the championship appears more open than ever.
