MPS applaud churches for supporting inmate rehabilitation

Steve Meke

The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) has commended churches and religious organisations across the country for their growing role in supporting the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates.

Speaking to the media, Malawi Prisons publicist Steve Meke expressed excitement over initiatives that allow inmates to minister in local churches and faith-based gatherings.

“We are so excited that, once in a while, inmates are able to minister in local churches or religious organisations as this promotes rehabilitation, reformation, reconciliation and community reintegration of offenders.” Said Meke.

He noted that such engagements not only benefit inmates but also contribute to broader societal healing and transformation.

According to Meke, connecting inmates with communities helps break down stigma and fosters acceptance.

“We have seen the promotion of positive change and healing. Once inmates are connected to communities, they are able to give back, and communities are also able to accept them as part of the greater society,” he said.

Meke further applauded faith-based institutions for creating a supportive environment both inside and outside prison facilities, describing their involvement as critical to the success of rehabilitation efforts.

He emphasized that partnerships between correctional services and religious groups remain key in helping former offenders rebuild their lives and reintegrate.
