Malawians can now breathe a sigh of relief after health authorities officially declared the end of the country’s Cholera and Mpox outbreaks.
The declaration follows the successful containment of the two outbreaks, with Malawi recording no laboratory-confirmed cholera cases for more than 28 consecutive days and no Mpox cases for over 90 days.
The milestone marks the interruption of transmission of both diseases following a nationwide public health response involving health workers, volunteers, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, the media and communities.
According to the Ministry of Health, Malawi recorded a total of 3,200 cholera cases across 18 affected districts, while 162 confirmed Mpox cases were recorded and contained during the outbreaks.
Authorities say the achievement demonstrates the impact of coordinated efforts to detect cases, provide treatment, strengthen disease surveillance and prevent further transmission.
The end of the outbreaks, however, does not mean the country can afford to lower its guard.
Communities have been urged to maintain high standards of personal and food hygiene, regularly wash their hands with soap, drink safe water and seek medical attention promptly whenever symptoms develop.
The public has also been encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspected cases to health facilities to help prevent a resurgence of the diseases.
The achievement has been attributed to the collective efforts of frontline health workers, volunteers, development partners, community leaders, media practitioners and members of the public who supported efforts to control the outbreaks.
Health authorities are expected to continue surveillance and preparedness measures to ensure that any new suspected cases are detected and responded to quickly.
The declaration is therefore being seen not only as an end to the current outbreaks, but also as a reminder of the importance of sustained public participation and strong health systems in preventing future disease outbreaks.
