Magalasi hit with fresh K3bn fraud charges


Former MERA CEO Collins Magalasi arrested amid the Amaryllis Hotel cash investigation

Collins Magalasi, one of the prominent figures who helped sell the DPP manifesto during the 2025 elections, is now facing fresh allegations over K3 billion allegedly taken from the Public Service Pension Trust Fund.

The former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) chief executive officer has been charged with money laundering, theft and facilitating fraud in a case linked to transactions surrounding the controversial Amaryllis Hotel acquisition.

The case is before Senior Resident Magistrate Shukurani Kumbani, with the State asking the court to keep Magalasi in custody as investigators pursue further inquiries.

According to the State, the K3 billion was allegedly misappropriated from the pension fund through fraudulent schemes that Magalasi is accused of facilitating.

Meanwhile, Magalasi’s defence lawyer, Andy Kaonga, is applying for another bail.

The latest charges add to mounting legal troubles for Magalasi, who is also facing a separate cybercrime case involving allegations of facilitating the hacking of phone numbers belonging to President Peter Mutharika and other senior government. officials.
