Ghana has declined to host South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for a planned state visit next month over xenophobic attacks targeting other Black African migrants in South Africa.
The decision follows the reported killing of Ghanaian national Bashiru Isak and renewed attacks against foreign nationals.
Isak, a 40-year-old fashion designer, was reportedly shot dead during anti-immigrant unrest in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, on June 30.
According to SaharaReporters, Ghana said Isak was killed during “anti-immigrant demonstrations linked to ongoing xenophobic attacks”.
Ghana has since lodged a formal protest with South African authorities and demanded action over the safety of its citizens living in the country.
Thousands of people from Malawi have fled South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks. Several Malawians have reportedly died during the violence or while trying to return home, while many others have arrived back in the country after losing homes, jobs and businesses.
South Africa has rejected Ghana’s claims, insisting that no deaths were recorded during the June 30 demonstrations.
