A group operating under the banner Advocacy for Demarcation of Mzimba into Districts has renewed calls for the demarcation of Mzimba District into additional districts, arguing that the move would accelerate development and improve the delivery of public services.

Speaking during a press briefing in Mzuzu on Saturday, the group’s chairperson, Keeper Gumbo, said the campaign aims to ensure that Mzimba is reorganised into smaller administrative districts to promote the equitable distribution of development resources.

Gumbo said the group has begun engaging traditional leaders to seek their guidance, blessing, and support before presenting the proposal to the relevant government authorities.

“We believe traditional leaders are key stakeholders in this process. Their support and guidance will strengthen our campaign and help ensure that the concerns of the people of Mzimba are properly represented,” he said.

According to Gumbo, Mzimba District’s vast geographical size has made it difficult for development initiatives and public services to reach all communities equitably.

He argued that creating additional districts would enable the government to allocate resources more efficiently, leading to improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential public services.

He expressed optimism that the proposal would receive favourable consideration from the authorities, saying the demarcation would stimulate economic growth by ensuring that each newly created district receives its own development budget and administrative structures.

“If Mzimba is demarcated into more districts, each district will receive its own allocation of government resources. This will accelerate development projects and improve service delivery to the people,” Gumbo added.

Responding to the group’s presentation, Inkosi Mthwalo welcomed the engagement and assured the delegation that the proposal would be considered through the appropriate traditional leadership structures.

He said the proposal would first be presented to Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V and the Chiefs’ Council for deliberation before an official position is communicated.

“As chiefs, we have listened to the concerns raised by the advocacy group. We will table the proposal before Inkosi ya Makhosi M’mbelwa and the Chiefs’ Council, after which an official response will be provided,” said Inkosi Mthwalo.

The meeting was also attended by Inkosi Kampingo Sibande and several other traditional leaders, who listened to the group’s presentation on the proposed demarcation of Mzimba into additional districts.

The advocacy group maintains that reorganising Mzimba into additional districts would bring government services closer to the people, improve administrative efficiency, and create greater opportunities for social and economic development across the area.
