80 inmates defy prison walls in MSCE bid

Prison walls will not stand in the way of education for 80 inmates as they prepare to sit this year’s Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.

The Malawi Prison Service (MPS) says all preparations have been completed to ensure the candidates across six correctional facilities are fully set for the exams.

MPS Public Relations Officer Steven Meke said the inmates will write their examinations from Zomba, Blantyre, Bvumbwe, Lilongwe, Mzimba and Mzuzu prisons.

“I can confirm that 80 candidates are ready to write MSCE exams this year from Zomba, Blantyre, Bvumbwe, Lilongwe, Mzimba and Mzuzu prisons. And interms of preparations all is set and we are ready for exams,” he said.

Meke stated that the service continues to give maximum support to the candidates to ensure they excel.

He noted that a similar increase in number of inmates sat for MSCE exams in prison facilities last year.

He further extended gratitude to government and various non-governmental organisations that support education initiatives in prisons.

According to him, government remains the leading partner, with other NGOs also contributing to academic and education-related activities for inmates.

The MSCE exams will run from June 29 to July 24 this year under the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB).
