The Gender and Justice Unit, an organization that advocates for human rights and educates people about legal matters has announced plans to introduce a project aimed at teaching communities about the law in Zomba District.
This was revealed by Immaculate Maluza Co-Coordinator of the Gender and Justice Unit during a Gender Technical Working Group meeting held at the Zomba District Council.
Maluza said that the project called EmpowerLine Plus, will assist people who experience various forms of abuse. Instead of traveling long distances to seek help, individuals affected by the issue will be able to receive assistance by calling the toll-free number 4825.
She explained that the three-year project will be implemented in partnership with the Women Judges Association of Malawi (WOJAM).
The collaboration aims to ensure that some legal cases can be handled and discussed within local communities, making justice more accessible.
Maluza added that the EmpowerLine Plus project will be implemented in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Lamusi in Zomba District because research has shown that the area experiences a high number of gender-based violence (GBV) cases.
“We want to assist people with legal matters and the challenges they face” she said.
Speaking at the meeting, Doshani Kumwenda, Deputy Executive Director of Youth for Development and Productivity (YODEP) said that the arrival of the Gender and Justice Unit in Zomba District will help many people gain a better understanding of legal issues and their rights.
