FIFA error turns ‘free’ World Cup seats into payment ultimatum

Supporters chasing World Cup 2026 dreams have been left stunned after a ticketing error involving FIFA briefly issued seats for free before the governing body reversed the transactions and demanded full payment within seven days or forfeit their tickets.

FIFA confirmed that roughly 60 supporters were impacted after a checkout malfunction briefly displayed “0 USD” at completion of purchase.

The error resulted in group-stage seats, including matches scheduled in Toronto, being assigned without charge.

The organization said the tickets remain validly reserved but stressed that the allocation was never intended to be free. It added that the mistake originated from a payment processing issue during the final stage of checkout.

Fans were later contacted directly and instructed to complete payment for the full amount. According to messages circulating online, supporters were warned that failure to pay within a week would result in cancellation of their allocations.

The incident has intensified wider scrutiny of FIFA’s ticketing approach, as regulators in parts of the United States examine whether pricing practices comply with consumer protection laws.

Officials in New York and New Jersey have reportedly issued legal requests for information on pricing systems, including variable pricing models.

Critics have raised concerns that dynamic pricing has significantly increased costs for many matches, while also altering seating arrangements in ways that have frustrated some ticket holders. The system has become a focal point of debate as demand for the expanded 48-team tournament grows.

Separate policy decisions, including last-minute restrictions on certain stadium items, have added to tensions among supporters preparing for travel across host nations.

These changes have fueled broader discussion about the fan experience at major international tournaments.

The World Cup is set to begin on 11 June across venues in Mexico, the United States and Canada, with the final scheduled at MetLife Stadium.
