United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi has condemned the incident in which former President Lazarus Chakwera was tear-gassed while attempting to lay a wreath at the mausoleum of Malawi’s Founding Father, the late President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda.
Muluzi, in a statement on his official Facebook page, described the incident as deeply unfortunate and urged Malawians who value peace to condemn it.
He noted that Kamuzu Banda was not only the MCP President but also the Founding Father of the Republic and he stressed that moments of national remembrance should unite people regardless of tribe, religion, or political affiliation.
“The Presidency is a national institution that must always be respected and protected. Any sitting or former Head of State deserves dignity, recognition, and respect in the discharge of national duties.” Muluzi said.
Muluzi also stressed that Malawians and Africans alike have a duty to uphold the spirit of togetherness, tolerance, and unity.
He argued that political differences should never erode the country’s shared humanity or undermine national dignity, and called on citizens to approach the moment with reflection and restraint.

We are not surprised by his condemnation, he has always been MCP except that he has another responsibility imposed on him by his father as the president of UDF, of which without this he could have been the central region campaign director for MCP. The position of presidency is just too much and big for him.
Attracting attention of many by doing the wrong, when power is being miscalculated. Was there any threat that police could not control without tear Gas?
