Pressure is mounting on Malawi’s churches after a sharp public attack accusing them of staying silent on a matter involving Malawians affected by violence in South Africa.

Entrepreneur and social media commentator Kondwani Kachamba has sharply criticized Malawi churches for what he describes as silence and absence in efforts linked to the repatriation and support of Malawian victims affected by attacks in South Africa.

In a Facebook post, Kachamba questioned why churches that have branches and followers in South Africa are not visibly taking part in supporting affected congregants, especially those who once contributed financially and materially to sustain ministries.

“Some churches opened branches in South Africa. These people welcomed you there. They provided your pastors with houses, food, and took care of them. Those people, from their little income, were supporting the church,” he said.

He argued that true service to God should be reflected in action, especially in moments of crisis, insisting that churches cannot remain silent when their members are suffering and in need of help.

Kachamba: repay the favour

“It’s time for you to return the favour don’t hide in the name of ndalama zinagwila ntchito ya Mulungu. God never came physically to use the money . God is not a Signatory wa Ku Bank.

“Serving God is using that money to help his people and take care of his flock. That’s what our Lord Jesus said. Peter do you love me? Take care of my flock,” Kachamba wrote on Facebook.

Kachamba further challenged religious leaders, suggesting that prioritizing investments while neglecting vulnerable members goes against the teachings of caring for the flock, as reflected in biblical scripture.

The Malawi government has appealed to well-wishers, companies, and organisations to support the repatriation of stranded Malawians from South Africa, saying the exercise needs over K24 billion and cannot be funded by government alone.

Meanwhile, Prophet Shepherd Bushiri of ECG has emerged as the only religious leader to actively intervene so far, reportedly stepping in to assist in the repatriation process as calls for broader participation from other stakeholders continue to grow.
