Mob hunts father accused of killing two sons

A Balaka community erupted in anger on Monday after a father allegedly killed his two young sons, forcing police to rescue him from a furious mob .

The suspect, Laston Mbendera, 27, is accused of murdering his sons, Peace Mbendera, 7, and Manic Mbendera, 2, at Zalimau Village under Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka District.

The shocking incident sparked outrage among villagers, who surrounded the suspect’s house intending to take the law into their own hands.

Police officers rushed to the scene after receiving the report and managed to rescue Mbendera before the mob reached him. He is now in police custody.

Balaka Police Station Public Relations Officer Inspector Gladson M’bumpha confirmed the incident, saying investigations are underway to establish what led to the alleged killings.

M’bumpha appealed to members of the public to refrain from mob justice and allow the law to deal with the suspect.

More details are expected as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
