Four people have died and several others sustained injuries following a fatal road accident that occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at the Tenenthe hilly area along the Chitipa–Karonga M26 Road.
Confirming the development with Malawi24, Karonga Police Public Relations Officer Sub-Inspector Rose Chipyola said the deceased have been identified as Moses Ngosi, 31, of Village Mwawembe, T/A Kyungu in Karonga; Innocent Sikana; Steven Junior; and one unidentified male, all of whom were passengers.”
Moses Mvula, 39, of Village Malawa, T/A Mwenewenya in Chitipa, was driving a Mitsubishi Canter 3-tonne lorry, registration number KK 9912, from Chitipa towards Karonga. The vehicle was carrying bags of beans and about ten passengers who were seated on top of the load.
“Upon reaching Tenenthe while descending the slopes and negotiating bends, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The lorry veered off the road, hit a road embankment and overturned,” she said.
The four victims died before receiving treatment at Karonga District Hospital after sustaining severe head and internal injuries.
The driver and other passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees and have been admitted to the same hospital.
The vehicle was extensively damaged. Meanwhile, the police have strongly warned the public against boarding open vehicles or sitting on top of goods, describing the practice as deadly and punishable by law.
