Malawi Police have arrested three teenagers in connection with the break-in at Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) offices in Lilongwe.
The burglary occurred last month and Vice President Saulos Chilima claimed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was behind the crime.
But police say the suspects are the three teenagers. They are Jackson Batani aged 17 of Ngombe Village, T/A Kaphuka in Dedza; Frank Masenda aged 15 of Sangwa Malira village, Traditional Authority Nsabwe in Thyolo and Manuel Mazoni aged 17 of Chidothi Village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa.
According to police spokesperson James Kadadzera, the first suspect was arrested on 9th May in Area 9 and was recognised after viewing CCTV footage at MEC.
After interviewing him, he mentioned the other two who were arrested on Saturday morning in Area 24.
Police added that the suspects are also connected to a series of burglaries in Area 15, 18 and Portuguese club.
“Our officers are getting more from the suspects to place proper criminal charges against them,” Kadadzera said.
