A court in Lilongwe has sentenced four people including a former Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldier to 15 years in prison for stealing from a Chipiku shop.
The four were also sentenced to 11 years imprisonment for stealing a phone but the second sentence will run concurrently with the first.
The Lilongwe Principal Resident Magistrate court heard that the four: Noel Kabango who is ex-MDF soldier, Jafali Bashili, Lyton Nangomba and Nickson Harold Banda attacked Nkhoma Chipiku Shop in Lilongwe.
State prosecutor Levison Mangani told the court that on the day of the robbery, the four thieves entered the Chipiku shop as branch manager and his staff were about to knock off from duty.
The criminals claimed to be Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) officials and demanded that the manager present to them MRA receipts. To make the manager and his team believe them, they produced MRA identity cards.
“When the manager gave them access, they immediately closed the door and demanded that everyone should lie down. When the manager showed some resistance, Noel Kabango produced a rifle and shot him on both thighs.
“They looked for the cash chest but they failed to open it because the other keys were with G4S security guard,” Mangani told the court.
After seeing that there was resistance, the criminals fled the scene with a dozen of Protex soap and a Blackberry phone belonging to Mayamiko Sankhani.
The robbers fled to Area 23 in the city but police later arrested them and impounded the vehicle which they were using.
When the matter was brought to court, they all pleaded guilty and were convicted on two counts of armed robbery.
The four were slapped with 15 years for the first count of armed robbery and 11 years for the second count of robbing the Blackberry curve.
Principal Resident Magistrate Chilunga Chirwa stated that he imposed a stiff sentence because the victim sustained serious injuries and will live with the resultant disability for the rest of his life.
Noel Kabango hails from Mbwindi village, Traditional Authority Njombwa in Kasungu district, Jafali Bashili comes from Mnjini village, Traditional Authority Tambala in Dedza district, the third suspect Lyton Nangomba hails from Jailosi Kaliati village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba district while the last suspect Nickson Harold Banda comes from Mtupanyama village, Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu district.
