First-year students at the University of Malawi (UNIMA) have accused some accommodation agents of collecting rental payments from them and failing to provide the promised accommodation.
The students allege that they paid money to secure housing before arriving on campus, but upon arrival they discovered that the accommodation either did not exist, had already been occupied, or was unavailable despite payment having been made.
One affected student, who requested anonymity, called on the police to investigate the matter and take action against those responsible.
According to the students, more than 20 first-year students were left stranded on Sunday after the agents allegedly stopped responding to phone calls and messages.”We paid money for accommodation, but the agents are no longer answering our calls,” the students said.
The students are alleging that the agents misrepresented the availability of accommodation and failed to honour their agreements after receiving payment.Police had not commented on the allegations by the time of publication.
