President Arthur Peter Mutharika has been urged to tap into the experience of former national leaders as Malawi seeks solutions to its growing challenges.
Leader of Opposition Simplex Chithyola Banda made the call, saying consultations with former presidents and vice presidents could help promote national unity and guide efforts to address the country’s challenges.
Chithyola made the proposal on Friday during Parliament’s sine die proceedings, where he called for the experience of former national leaders to be brought into efforts to find lasting solutions to the country’s problems.
He specifically mentioned former presidents Lazarus Chakwera, Joyce Banda and Bakili Muluzi, as well as former vice presidents Khumbo Kachali and Michael Usi.
Chithyola said Mutharika could benefit from engaging leaders who have previously held senior positions in government, particularly at a time when Malawi needs greater unity and dialogue.
“I propose a presidential advisory council … involving former presidents and former vice presidents,” said Chithyola.
He said bringing together former and current leaders could help the country draw lessons from different administrations and encourage dialogue across political lines.
Chithyola said Malawi could not afford to remain divided, arguing that national leaders had a responsibility to work together in the interests of the country.
He said such consultations could contribute to lasting peace and help create a broader national approach to dealing with Malawi’s political, economic and social challenges.

The only useless person here must be you, coz taking into consideration how Mutharika is struggling with national matters, he needs guidance. The stupid old man must just swallow his pride and arrogance. This Malawi belongs to every Malawian so, he must stop being stupid and thinking that he is a fucking good leader yet he is the most clueless leadership ever in the history of country.
Where was this idea when Laza was on the seat?
Could they have suggested so and why did they fail to suggest such solution to the past Government where he was also in a cabinet?
If he was to ask could have been Bingu and Chihana the rest leaders were useless.
That’s true Mr John. Bingu and Chihana were brains. The rest were below average and chakwera was a trash
