The Scorchers’ historic run at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations has united the nation, and now the excitement has reached Parliament, with a call for female lawmakers to travel to Morocco and cheer on in person.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Minister of Gender Mary Navicha appealed to Speaker of Parliament Sameer Suleman to allow a delegation of female Members of Parliament to travel to Morocco and show their appreciation for the Malawi Women’s National Football Team following its historic performances at the tournament.
“On behalf of parliamentary women members, I would like to request your office, Mr Speaker, to allow a few women to go and represent the Malawi Parliament and appreciate what our women are doing out there,” said Navicha.
Her remarks came after Parliament paused its proceedings to applaud the Scorchers, whose remarkable run in Morocco has captured the nation’s imagination and established them as one of the tournament’s biggest success stories.
Rather than limiting Parliament’s support to applause, Navicha proposed a symbolic gesture that would see women leaders standing shoulder to shoulder with the country’s women footballers on the continental stage.
The proposal reflects the growing admiration for the Scorchers, whose fearless performances have transformed them from tournament underdogs into national heroes.
Responding to the request, Speaker Suleman said the proposal would be considered. He, however, urged Members of Parliament from both sides of the House to turn out in large numbers to welcome the team at the airport upon its return, expressing confidence that the Scorchers could bring the WAFCON trophy home.
The Scorchers have enjoyed a dream debut at the 2026 WAFCON, stunning defending champions Nigeria 3-2 before following it up with a commanding 3-1 victory over Egypt.
The back-to-back wins have placed Malawi among the tournament’s early frontrunners, with the team now on the brink of a historic place in the knockout stages.
