BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on Brazil to stand with China in strengthening BRICS and giving the Global South a bigger voice in world affairs.
Speaking by phone with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday, Xi said China and Brazil should “firmly stand on the right side of history” and work together to reform the global governance system, uphold international fairness and justice, and deepen cooperation between developing nations.
Xi said China was ready to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral strategic coordination with Brazil. He urged the two countries to jointly promote high-quality BRICS cooperation, maintain unity and “write a new chapter of solidarity and self-reliance for the Global South.”
The Chinese leader also reaffirmed Beijing’s support for Brazil’s sovereignty and opposition to external interference, saying China highly values Brazil’s international influence and its role in promoting regional and global stability.
Lula welcomed closer ties and said Brazil wanted to expand cooperation with China in artificial intelligence, energy and mineral resources. He also invited more Chinese companies to invest in Brazil to diversify bilateral cooperation and deliver greater economic benefits.
The Brazilian president congratulated China on hosting the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and praised Xi’s vision for international cooperation on artificial intelligence. He also pledged closer coordination with Beijing at the United Nations and within BRICS, saying Brazil remains committed to multilateralism, dialogue to resolve international disputes and defending international fairness and justice.
The call underscores Beijing’s efforts to strengthen ties with major emerging economies as China seeks to expand BRICS’ influence and position the Global South as a stronger force in world affairs amid growing geopolitical tensions.
