For years, residents of Bowe under Sub Traditional Authority Chilumbuwanja in Rumphi woke up before sunrise to hunt for water from unsafe wells.
That painful chapter has finally been closed after Mathews Mtumbuka who is a member of Parliament for the area pumped K10 million of his own money into bringing piped water to the community.
The new taps have ended years of depending on unprotected water sources that exposed residents to waterborne diseases.
Receiving the project, Sub TA Chilumbuwanja said clean water is not a luxury but a basic need for every citizen.
He said women carried the heaviest burden, waking up at dawn and walking long distances just to fetch water from unsafe wells.
According to the traditional leader, the new water points will not only save time but also help protect families from diseases linked to contaminated water.
The chief applauded Mtumbuka for easing one of the community’s biggest headaches.
Mtumbuka said he spent K10 million from his own pocket to install piped water in several parts of the area so that residents can access safe and clean water closer to their homes.
