The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has raised concern over the treatment of people held in police cells and prisons, warning that protecting detainees’ rights remains a major challenge.
Speaking in Blantyre on Tuesday during a human rights orientation workshop for police and prison officers, MHRC Commissioner Theresa Ndanga said the commission’s investigations have uncovered continued cases of abuse, including torture, committed by some officers against people in custody.
Ndanga said such practices violate both national and international human rights standards and must be brought to an end.
She said the orientation, supported by Irish Rule of Law International, is designed to strengthen officers’ understanding of human rights and promote respect for the rights of people deprived of their liberty.
“The training is intended to raise awareness and enhance understanding among police and prison officers so that the dignity and rights of all people in custody are respected and protected,” she said.
Ndanga emphasized that every person, regardless of the allegations or offences they face, is entitled to humane treatment and protection from torture or any other form of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment.
The workshop brought together officers from the Malawi Police Service and the Malawi Prison Service to strengthen their capacity to promote and protect human rights while carrying out their duties.
The Malawi Human Rights Commission continues to advocate for accountability and strict adherence to human rights standards across all public institutions, particularly those responsible for the custody and detention of individuals.
