Malawi Second Vice President Enoch Chihana is leading a Cabinet meeting in Lilongwe.

Chihana is taking charge of government’s top decision-making forum as President Peter Mutharika attends to other official duties in Blantyre.

The move is said to allow Cabinet business continue despite the President’s absence, with attention now on decisions and discussions expected from the meeting.

Mutharika delegated Chihana to chair the meeting in accordance with Section 92(3) of the Constitution, which outlines who can preside over Cabinet meetings when the President is unavailable.

The constitutional provision states that Cabinet meetings may be chaired by the President, the First Vice President in the President’s temporary absence, or the Second Vice President when both the President and First Vice President are unavailable.
