Communities stand a better chance of becoming safer when traditional leaders take an active role in tackling crime and gender based violence, Balaka Police have said.
The call was made on Sunday during the installation of Group Village Headman Nsamala under Traditional Authority Nsamala, where Community Policing Coordinator Sub Inspector Masautso Katemera urged the new chief to work closely with police to strengthen security and protect vulnerable people.
Speaking on behalf of the Officer In Charge for Balaka Police Station, Katemera said cooperation between chiefs and law enforcement is crucial in preventing crime and responding to gender based violence cases.
He said traditional leaders are well placed to mobilise communities, encourage reporting of offences and support efforts to bring offenders to justice.
Traditional Authority Nsamala agreed with the appeal, urging fellow chiefs and community members to report all criminal activities and gender based violence cases to the police without fear.
He said collective action is essential to ending the vice and creating peaceful communities.
The traditional leader also thanked the Balaka Police Station management for being part of the installation ceremony, saying the partnership between police and traditional authorities will help improve security across the area.
