Blantyre City Council (BCC) has warned that anyone found illegally selling, allocating, or occupying Council land faces legal action and demolition of structures.
In a public notice, the Council said it has noted reports of unauthorised persons, including some village headmen, illegally selling or allocating land that belongs to the Council.
“illegal sale, allocation, occupation, or development of Council land is a serious offence and is punishable under the law,” reads the notice.
The Council clarified that Council land is public land and cannot be sold, allocated, or transferred by village headmen or any other unauthorised persons.
It has further warned that anyone found engaging in the illegal sale, allocation, or occupation of Council land will face prosecution.
In addition, all illegal structures erected on Council land are liable to demolition in accordance with the law.
The Council is advising members of the public to verify the ownership and legal status of any land with Blantyre City Council before entering into any land transaction.
