The Malawi Prison Service has announced a 12-month reduction in prison sentences for eligible inmates across the country.
Confirming the development, MPS Public Relations Officer Assistant Superintendent Steve Charles Meke said inmates serving life sentences are not included in the sentence reduction.
Meke said the measure is expected to help ease congestion in prisons and reduce the pressure on resources such as food and accommodation.
He urged beneficiaries of the sentence reduction to embrace rehabilitation and avoid engaging in criminal activities after their release.
“We are appealing to all inmates who have benefited from this pardon to refrain from committing crimes and become responsible members of society,” said Meke.
He also called on families and communities to welcome the released inmates and support their reintegration into society without prejudice.
