Mike Kamanga has secured a fully funded scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree in Economics for Development at the University of Oxford after graduating from the University of Malawi (UNIMA) last year with Distinction.
Kamanga, who graduated with a Bachelor of Economics in August 2025, was awarded the Oxford Department of International Development (ODID) Departmental Scholarship to study at the United Kingdom’s prestigious University of Oxford.
The University of Malawi’s Department of Economics announced the award in a statement, describing the scholarship as highly competitive and reserved for outstanding students from developing countries with exceptional academic records, leadership potential and a commitment to contributing to development.
According to the department, Kamanga has served as a member of staff in the Department of Economics since graduating and his selection reflects his academic excellence, hard work and dedication.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees and provides a living stipend for the duration of the one-year Master’s programme.Kamanga is expected to begin his studies in September 2026, with the programme scheduled to run until June 2027.
In the statement, the department said Kamanga’s achievement is a source of pride for both the Department of Economics and the University of Malawi, adding that it demonstrates the institution’s ability to produce graduates capable of competing for opportunities at some of the world’s leading universities.
The department wished Kamanga success in his studies and expressed confidence that he will continue to make meaningful contributions to both the university and Malawi after completing the programme.
