Students in Kasungu Central have a new reason to work hard in school after their Member of Parliament (MP) introduced a programme to reward top performers and support their education beyond secondary school.
Member of Parliament for Kasungu Central, Chikondi Kampachike Chisale, announced the initiative on Thursday during a farewell ceremony for Form Four students at Chilanga Community Day Secondary School (CDSS).
Chisale said every student from the constituency who scores nine points or below in the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) examinations will receive K200,000 and support to continue their studies up to tertiary level.
He said the programme is aimed at encouraging students to take their studies seriously and strive for academic excellence.
According to Chisale, communities develop faster when their people are well educated, making investment in education a key priority.
Head teacher Daniel Saka welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and important for both learners and teachers.
Saka said the programme is expected to motivate students to work harder while encouraging teachers to remain committed to improving academic performance at the school.
One of the students, Goodwell Phiri, said learners are determined to succeed but face challenges due to a shortage of learning materials in community day secondary schools.
Phiri cited a lack of textbooks and other educational resources as some of the factors affecting students’ performance.
The initiative is expected to benefit high-achieving students in the constituency and provide greater access to higher education for those who excel in their examinations.
