The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority has announced sweeping price cuts of Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene.
According to MERA, Petrol drops to 5,619 from 6,209 a 9.50 percent drop while Diesel is down by 5.70 percent to 6,306 kwacha from 6,687 kwacha per litre.
In a statement MERA Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe confirmed that petrol, diesel, and kerosene prices have dropped following a decrease in average Free on Board prices since the last revision on 8th May 2026.
MERA said all three products qualified for reduction under the Automatic Pricing Mechanism.
The Authority indicated that the APM triggers an adjustment when InBond Landed Costs (IBLCs) move beyond a ±5% band and this month, IBLCs which cover FOB prices, freight, insurance, handling, losses, levies and margins fell enough to activate the cut.
“By law, all retail operators are required to sell Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene at prices not exceeding the above approved maximum pump prices,” the regulator warned.
The Board, through Kondowe further said it will continue monitoring global petroleum markets. It cited the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East as a key factor still impacting world prices and supply chain costs.
