Malawi could be on the verge of a major digital transformation as the government pursues a proposed US$180 million investment with Huawei to expand internet access, strengthen ICT infrastructure and bring more digital services to communities across the country over the next four years.
Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Shadric Namalomba, is currently in China holding high-level discussions with Huawei officials on the proposed investment plan, which is expected to support Malawi’s drive towards a more connected and technology-driven economy.
During a meeting with Huawei officials on Monday, Namalomba presented a four-year roadmap focused on improving access to government services and strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure.
According to information released from the discussions, the plan is built around two key projects.
The first is a one-stop digital government platform that would allow citizens to access various public services through a single online portal, including passport applications, business registration and tax payments.
The second project focuses on national connectivity.
The proposal seeks to establish a high-speed network linking all 28 districts of Malawi and incorporate ring protection technology designed to reduce service disruptions caused by cable failures.
Namalomba said the initiative goes beyond infrastructure development and aims to improve the delivery of government services.
He said the goal is to provide citizens with more efficient, transparent and reliable access to public services through digital technology.
The proposed investment comes as Malawi continues efforts to expand digital transformation and increase access to ICT services across the country.
Improved connectivity has been identified as a key factor in supporting economic growth, public service delivery and access to information.
Details on the funding structure, implementation timeline and any agreements reached with Huawei have not yet been made public.
The discussions in China form part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise Malawi’s digital infrastructure and expand the use of technology in public administration over the coming years.
