150 returnees from South Africa arrive in Blantyre

A total of 150 Malawians evacuated from South Africa have arrived at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, where they are undergoing health screening before being transported to their home districts.

The group arrived on Monday aboard two buses that left Western Cape Province on Saturday, as part of the government’s voluntary repatriation exercise.

The exercise comes as South Africa continues to experience unrest and health concerns, prompting some Malawians to return home voluntarily. Officials say only those who agreed to return were transported.

Upon arrival at Kamuzu Stadium, the returnees were received by government officials, with a formal welcoming arrangement expected to take place today Tuesday.

Health workers were immediately deployed at the stadium to conduct medical checks on the arrivals, including screening to ensure public safety before they are cleared to proceed to their respective communities.

Government officials from relevant ministries and departments are also expected to oversee the processing exercise, which includes verification, documentation, and coordination of onward transport.

Authorities say the repatriation effort is part of ongoing measures to ensure the safe return of Malawians affected by the situation in South Africa, while also safeguarding public health within the country.

The returnees are expected to be transported from Blantyre to their respective home districts after completion of the screening and registration process.
