There are expectations that thousands of pupils in Rumphi Central will gain extra study hours, improve their examination performance and boost their chances of progressing to secondary school after 11 rural primary schools received solar lighting systems.
The initiative, implemented through a partnership between Energy Solutions Limited and Rumphi Central Member of Parliament Matthews Mtumbuka, has equipped 11 primary schools with solar lighting systems to help learners, particularly Standard 8 candidates, study during the evening.
Energy Solutions Limited Business Development Manager Timothy Harawa said the partnership is already creating opportunities for learners to extend their study hours while promoting access to clean and affordable energy.
Harawa said the company remains committed to providing sustainable solar solutions that support education, communication, security and economic development in communities.
Mtumbuka said access to reliable lighting is critical in improving academic performance among learners in rural schools.
“The only remedy for many rural primary schools, especially for Standard 8 learners, is to ensure they have light for studying. We expect to see positive results from this intervention,” he said.
Chief Principle Mwachirwa described the initiative as a historic milestone for Rumphi Central, saying it is the first project of its kind in the constituency.
He said the solar lighting systems will help improve education standards by giving pupils more time to study and prepare for examinations.
