A 42-year-old employee at Mzuzu Central Hospital has been arrested after he was allegedly caught on CCTV footage, secretly handing over stolen drugs to another person outside the hospital premises.
Police in Mzuzu have identified the suspect as Kelvin Makina, who is suspected of stealing medicines from the hospital on May 18, 2026.
Northern Region Police spokesperson Cecilia Mfune said a fellow hospital worker noticed Makina acting suspiciously and alerted officials responsible for monitoring the hospital’s CCTV system.

Mfune said the footage allegedly showed Makina secretly giving hospital drugs to another person who later smuggled them out of the facility.
She said hospital authorities later reviewed the footage and conducted a search in a room where the suspect had reportedly hidden the medicines.
According to Mfune, Makina failed to give a satisfactory explanation when questioned about the drugs.
Police arrested the suspect on Tuesday after he allegedly went into hiding following the incident.
Mfune added that Makina has since admitted to stealing the medicines and is expected to appear in court soon to answer theft-related charges.
