Airtel Money Malawi has warned customers not to send money to unknown individuals claiming to facilitate prize claims, amid rising mobile money fraud involving fake promotional messages.
The warning comes as the company rolls out the “Tola” promotion, a three-month nationwide campaign offering over K600 million in rewards, including a K50 million grand prize, weekly cash prizes, and instant giveaways.
Airtel Money officials said fraudsters are increasingly exploiting such promotions by impersonating company representatives and sending deceptive messages that instruct customers to pay fees or send money before receiving alleged winnings.
They reminded customers that legitimate Airtel Money promotions do not require any payment to claim prizes, and urged users to avoid sharing PINs, verification codes, or account details with unknown individuals.
The concerns were reinforced by the Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA), which cautioned the public to be wary of fraudsters using false winnings and urgency tactics to trick victims.
MAGLA Director General, Muchanakhwaye Mpuluka, said scammers often pressure victims into sending money under the false promise of receiving prizes.
“There are a lot of fraudsters around. You will find them coming up with messages claiming you have won money and asking you to send money first before receiving your prize,” he said.
He stressed that no legitimate promotion requires customers to make payments to claim winnings.
Airtel Malawi Marketing Director, Joshua Sichinga, said the campaign is designed to reward customers for everyday Airtel Money transactions while promoting safe use of digital financial services.
He added that winners will only be contacted through official Airtel communication channels and urged customers to verify all messages before responding.
