The Malawi Network of Older Persons’ Organisations (MANEPO) has called for swift investigations and immediate justice following the brutal killing of three elderly people in Mchelera Community in Mzimba District over accusations of witchcraft.
MANEPO Executive Director Andrew Kavala said the organisation was deeply alarmed by reports that some local leaders allegedly played a role in fuelling suspicion and enabling the violence, describing the incident as a serious breakdown of community protection systems and accountability.
“This represents a serious breakdown of protection systems and accountability at community level,” said Kavala in a statement released on Monday.
The victims, identified as Paul Mahobe, 78, Charles Kamanga, 78, and Styness Shaba, 71, reportedly died on April 30, 2026 after being subjected to a so-called “trial by ordeal” linked to witchcraft allegations.
According to MANEPO, the three were allegedly forced to consume a poisonous substance during what was described as a cleansing ritual” reportedly facilitated by local leadership and a self-proclaimed witch hunter.
Kavala condemned the killings as barbaric, illegal and a gross violation of the right to life, dignity and due process.
He said the incident highlights the continued targeting of older people as scapegoats during periods of fear, social tension and misinformation.
“No person must ever be accused, tried, or punished outside the law. The use of poisonous substances and forced ordeals as a so-called test of guilt is barbaric, illegal, and contrary to the Constitution of Malawi and international human rights standards,” he said.
MANEPO has since urged government and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that all perpetrators, instigators and accomplices are brought to justice without delay.
