In a derby dripping with tension, drama and chaos, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets finally exorcised their derby demons, overpowering bitter rivals Mighty Wanderers 2-1 in a pulsating FDH Bank Premiership clash at Bingu National Stadium on Sunday

.After suffering the humiliation of four straight defeats to the Nomads, Bullets arrived wounded but hungry for revenge — and when the dust settled in front of a roaring crowd, the People’s Team had reclaimed their pride in spectacular fashion.

The ghosts of recent derby heartbreak seemed destined to linger after Wanderers had dominated the fixture last season, beating Bullets twice in the league, once in cup action and again in this season’s Charity Shield opener. But Sunday belonged to Bullets.

The red tide surged almost immediately.Just five minutes into the explosive encounter, Bullets struck first after livewire Ephraim Kondowe was hacked down inside the area. Up stepped defender Blessings Mpokera, who kept his cool amid deafening pressure to bury the penalty and ignite wild celebrations.

Stunned but not broken, Wanderers attempted to fight back through Dan Kudonto, whose effort was safely gathered by goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu, while Bullets continued to threaten through the lively Kondowe and Clever Kalambo.

Kalambo nearly sent Bullets fans into dreamland in the 15th minute, bursting into the box and unleashing a thunderous effort, only for Wanderers shot-stopper Chancy Mtete to pull off a stunning save.

As expected in Malawi’s fiercest rivalry, emotions boiled over.

Tempers exploded midway through the first half as Kondowe and Kudonto clashed in a heated confrontation that earned both men yellow cards.

The Nomads pressed desperately before halftime, but Nyasulu stood tall, denying Alex Kambirinya with a composed save after a dangerous delivery from Stanley Sanudi. If the first half simmered, the second half exploded.

Wanderers came out breathing fire, launching relentless attacks in search of an equaliser. Substitute Promise Kamwendo rattled the crossbar moments after the restart, while Isaac Kaliati and Gaddie Chirwa both struck the woodwork as Bullets came under siege.

Yet football can be cruel.Against the run of play, Bullets landed a devastating sucker punch in the 58th minute when Maxwell Gasten Phodo rose to flick home from Mpokera’s teasing corner, doubling the lead and sending Bullets supporters into delirium. But the drama was far from over.

Barely three minutes later, Wanderers were handed a lifeline after winning a penalty for handball inside the area. Kamwendo coolly slotted home in the 61st minute, reigniting hopes of a comeback and turning the derby into a nerve-shredding finale. Then came the chaos.

The heated battle boiled over in ugly scenes as Bullets official Noel Kaole was shown red in the 69th minute, before tensions exploded completely when Phodo and Gaddie Chirwa were both sent off after exchanging blows in a fiery confrontation.

With emotions running high, Wanderers threw everything forward in the dying moments, but Nyasulu refused to crack, producing a crucial save to deny Adam Wallace and preserve Bullets’ precious lead.

Late concern gripped Wanderers when defender Kambirinya was stretchered off and rushed to an ambulance following an injury scare.

After four agonising minutes of stoppage time, the final whistle sparked jubilation for Bullets and heartbreak for Wanderers.

The People’s Team had finally ended the nightmare, halting Wanderers’ four-match derby dominance, restoring pride and reminding Malawi that when Bullets fire, they still roar loudest.
