The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that at least 17 Malawians died on Tuesday when a bus heading to Malawi from South Africa overturned in Zimbabwe.

The accident occurred on 5 May 2026, between Kotwa town and the Nyamapanda Border Post, and the bus was carrying approximately 60 passengers and 3 crew members.

“60 passengers and 3 crew members en route to Malawi, overturned between Kotwa town and Nyamapanda Border Post,” reads part of the statement.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry, many other Malawians sustained injuries of varying degrees and are receiving treatment at Mutoko and Kotwa District Hospitals and Parirenyatwa referral hospital in Harare.

Officials from the Malawi Embassy in Harare are on the ground working with Zimbabwean authorities to assist the injured and secure the remains of the deceased.

The embassy is also providing consular support to ensure all Malawians involved in the crash receive medical care.

The Ministry further assured the public that it will continue to provide timely updates as more information becomes available.
