Malawi’s President Arthur Peter Mutharika (APM) has expressed shock at the deteriorating condition of the M1 road between Blantyre and Lilongwe following his recent trip to the commercial city.

Speaking after arriving in Lilongwe, Mutharika tore into previous administration, saying they had run the country into the ground and left Malawi collapsing before the eyes of its people.

APM said the state of the country’s roads reflected years of neglect by the previous administration of President Lazarus Chakwera and his Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

“This country was destroyed. Everything was left in complete ruins. For example, the roads in Malawi are now a disaster. It has taken us over six hours just to travel from Blantyre to Lilongwe because the roads have turned into endless trenches of potholes. This is not normal. Malawi was left in a terrible state, but we are going to fix it,” said Mutharika

The President also assured supporters that his administration would focus on development projects aimed at strengthening the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to secure another landslide victory in the 2030 presidential elections.

Mutharika further dismissed rumours surrounding his health, describing them as baseless and unnecessary.
