Appeal made for sustained recognition, remembrance of war veterans

A call has been made for the nation, civil society organisations, and development partners to strengthen how Malawi recognises and remembers war veterans, ensuring that their sacrifices are not only acknowledged in speeches and ceremonies, but reflected in sustained support that improves their daily lives and dignity.

War veterans in Malawi carry the weight of sacrifice that secured the peace the country enjoys today. Yet, many continue to live in quiet struggle, often without consistent recognition or adequate support.

The growing appeal is for a more coordinated national effort that keeps their contribution at the centre of public remembrance and welfare action.

This call is being reinforced through a 10-year partnership between the Malawi Defence Force and a leading commercial bank, aimed at strengthening long-term welfare support for retired soldiers through the MDF Veterans Thanksgiving Golf Tournament, a platform dedicated to raising resources and honouring their service.

Over the years, NBS Bank’s contribution to the initiative has significantly increased, rising from K16.5 million in 2020 to K100 million in 2025.

The bank is now the lead sponsor, becoming the largest private sector contributor to veterans’ welfare through the programme.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NBS Bank Chief Executive Officer Temwani Simwaka said remembering veterans must be a shared national responsibility that extends beyond institutions to communities, NGOs, and the private sector.

“Service to the nation does not end at retirement. The peace and progress we enjoy today was built on the sacrifices of these men and women, and we must never forget that,” she said.

She added that sustained partnerships are key to ensuring that remembrance is matched with practical, long-term support for veterans and their families.

On his part, MDF Chief of Defence Force George Jaffu said the initiative reflects gratitude and national unity, urging continued recognition of those who served.

“This tournament is more than a sporting event. It is a platform for national unity and a vehicle for honouring those who gave everything so that others could live in peace,” he said.

He further noted that proceeds from the tournament continue to support critical welfare needs including housing, healthcare, food, clothing, and assistance for veterans and their dependants.

Beyond financial support, the bank has also introduced financial literacy training, SME advisory services, and tailored banking solutions for retired military personnel, reinforcing the broader national call to ensure war veterans are consistently remembered, respected, and supported.
