Power disconnection to recover K16 billion debt.

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), will roll out a mass electricity disconnection exercise on Monday 4 May 2026 targeting postpaid customers in the southern and central regions with outstanding bills.

ESCOM announced the campaign in a statement and said it aims to recover an estimated K16 billion in accumulated arrears.

ESCOM says the exercise is key to its revenue mobilization strategy and the K16 billion is essential for sustaining operations and reliable power supply nationwide.

The disconnections will target all customer accounts with outstanding balances of 120 days and beyond including private households parastatals government ministries departments and agencies and commercial entities.

ESCOM said power supply will only be restored after full settlement of outstanding arrears and payment of applicable reconnection fees.

The corporation appealed to customers with accumulated debt to clear their accounts immediately through authorized payment channels to avoid disconnection.
