Police arrest two men with 107 litres of petrol in Karonga.

Two men have been arrested and 107 litres of petrol seized during intelligence-driven operations conducted by police on April 28, 2026, in Karonga District, in a crackdown on the illegal sale of liquid fuels.

Confirming the development with Malawi24, Rose Chipyola, Public Relations Officer for Karonga Police Station, said the suspects were arrested for selling fuel without a licence.

“We have arrested Tiwonge Kalinga, 42, from Peter Mwangalaba Village, T/A Kyungu in Karonga District, and Benard Kalagho, 29, from Mwalupanga Village, T/A Mwaulambia in Chitipa District.

“The two were found selling 73 litres of petrol, which has since been seized by police”, she said.She further said both suspects are expected to appear before court once investigations are completed.”

In a related operation at the Songwe Border Post in the district, detectives confiscated 34 litres of petrol after the owners abandoned the fuel and fled upon seeing police.

Investigations are underway to trace and arrest the suspects who escaped”, she added.
