Government to sell abandoned aircraft at KIA after 17 years

Abandoned aircraft on the runway at Kamuzu International Airport, Malawi, after 17 years.

An aircraft that has reportedly remained idle for 17 years at Kamuzu International Airport is now set for sale, as government moves to clear what it describes as a long-standing obstruction to airport operations.

The abandoned Ukrainian IL-76 cargo plane, registered 3X-GFR, has been stationed at the airport for more than 15 years.

Over time, it has deteriorated significantly due to exposure and vandalism, while also accumulating over $ 45,000 in unpaid parking fees.

Government had earlier issued a 30-day ultimatum for the owners to remove the aircraft, but no response was received.

Following the expiry of the deadline, authorities have now initiated forfeiture proceedings, paving the way for the sale and removal of the aircraft from airport grounds.

Transport Minister Jappie Mhango has told the local media that government has opted to sell the aircraft after failing to trace its owners despite repeated efforts.

He said it is unfortunate that some foreign operators abandon property in Malawi without taking responsibility, leaving authorities to manage the consequences.

The aircraft is believed to have been left behind after cargo was offloaded, with the crew reportedly leaving and never returning.

Officials say the decision is expected to restore full operational efficiency at KIA, where the aircraft has long occupied valuable space and posed management challenges.

The aircraft is being linked to a company known as Gravia.
