Muluzi clarifies remarks on leadership, denies targeting President Mutharika
United Democratic Front (UDF) leader, Atupele Muluzi, has dismissed claims that his recent comments on leadership and reform are directed at President Peter Mutharika and says his statements are being misinterpreted.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Muluzi said he was concerned that his calls for reform were being interpreted as personal criticism of Mutharika.
“I hold him in high regards and look to him as a father figure,” said Muluzi.
Muluzi disclosed that his most recent meeting with President Peter Mutharika occurred in March 2025 at Mutharika’s residence in Mangochi and was characterized by cordial discussions on Malawi’s future.
Despite this, Muluzi reaffirmed his role as an opposition leader and stressed that speaking out on governance issues is a fundamental responsibility in a democratic society.
“At the same time, I am a leader of an opposition political party in a democratic Malawi. It is both my duty and responsibility to speak on issues affecting our nation and to hold government to account where necessary,” he said.
He added that such criticism should not be viewed as personal attacks but rather as part of the democratic process.
